Site Update Time Again

Website Moving

.

If you happened to drop in here last Friday you may have noticed we weren’t home. That was because we managed to overload our server. Ooops, our bad. As well as the three sites linked here my wife and I also run five others not related to modelling plus two more in development. Obviously with growth over the years we’ve gotten to the point where we need to move to a bigger virtual home.

These are our hobbies so we’ve been running these on shared servers and it’s a big leap to move to a dedicated server – ie we’re going from $15 a month which the google ads cover to $300 a month which they don’t come close to covering (so if you’re feeling generous feel free to drop a few pennies in the coffers, all tips gratefully accepted). To be honest over the past couple of days the thought was mooted that maybe it was just time to call it a day. But I enjoy doing this, I can’t model at night, it hurts the eyes too much, and this fills in two or three hours every night for me now. I’d miss it. So we’ll see how it goes.

We spent the weekend going through and optimising the sites and we have more work to do, but already you should be seeing an increase in loading speed etc. Part of that optimistation was to simply reduce the page size which used to display the latest five posts, but now only shows three (on WWIModeller it shows three fluid posts plus the menu which is something I may yet add to the other two as well). With the heavy number of images on the site this made a huge difference just doing that. We’ve also shed a few unnecessary widgets and plugins and over the next few weeks will be looking into some of the more involved stuff that requires people who speak fluent geek.

So in a nutshell that means that in the very near future we’ll be moving servers and may be down for another day at some point, and until we’re moved and up and running all hunky dory once more I’ve put the launch of our Diorama themed site on hold because lets face it, if we’re overloading the server now more traffic is hardly going to help matters.

So a few things are on hold while we tweak things, and there may be the odd hiccup while we get ourselves all sorted out, but once we’ve done that hopefully we’ll be able to carry on for a few more years before we have to think about doing all that again.

And A Very Happy New Year To One And All

German Bus

.

Well I can tell you that on a personal level I can definitely put 2012 into the “let’s not do that again” basket. There were highs but there were definitely some lows in there that I’d rather not have to go through again. But on a modelling level it was pretty much all highs and I’m hard pressed to think of all the things that made it a good year in plastic for me. Off the top of my head winners would be the Sd.Kfz.8 series making it into plastic, the new Sd.Kfz.232 range of kits, the continued high quality output from the likes of Bronco and Amusing Hobby, and the huge growth in trucks, especially Allied ones. If I had to identify a low there is only one that stands out and that would be the promise of great things in 1/32 scale aircraft from HK Model not coming to fruition.

Each year I look back and there are great things that stand out, and at the same time I look ahead and wonder what the next year will bring, so it’s always nice to get to this point and see that yet again I can tick off a few things from my last “hopes for the coming year” wishlist. Of course that also means that now is the time to cast a look back into the crystal ball for 2012 and run down the wishlist once more for those things that still haven’t seen light of day.

Still waiting on a new Wespe and Krupp Protze in 1/35 from DML along with a Tunisian Tiger ( one that doesn’t cost uber dollars on ebay ). Still wanting a bus and a tram from anyone halfway decent. In fact I’m greedy, I’d like several buses please. Still waiting for Tamiya to turn their Steyr 1500A into a 2000 and add a few variants like an ambulance and a radio truck. Likewise still hoping they’ll do an 8.8cm FlaK 37 version of their Sd.Kfz.9.

What else ? Geez, can’t believe I missed these, still waiting for anyone ( preferably Bronco but I’d be happy with anyone mainstream ) to do a new T-28 and T-35 so I can stop being tempted to pay stupid money for one of the old ICM kits. I know it’s ridiculous but I really want a Char 2C as well, and of course still hoping that Tasca has a Sherman DD, Crab and Dozer in the pipeline.

Then there’s WWI armour. Still hoping someone will take the plunge and at least do a state of the art FT17. I really, really want a good Mk.IV Male and a Whippet but I’m happy to compromise because I’m close to giving in and buying an Emhar one and hitting it with all the resin AM bits it needs.

And while I’m being greedy I still want a 1/35 Ju52 and a 1/32 Fw200 Condor. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

So that’s my wishlist for 2013 and I’m hoping that in a years time when I’m doing this that I’ll be able to once again tick a few of those off the list. I know that in the meantime a lot of new stuff will come along, probably including stuff I never even thought of, and more importantly didn’t realise I wanted till it was put in front of me. I know that in reality I could go the whole year with nothing new coming out to interest me and I’d still have plenty to keep me going, but I’m just not wired that way.

So bring on the new kits for 2013, there’s a small space in the very top corner of the stash that could probably fit one more kit.

It’s Xmas Break Time, See You In A Week

Santa-In-A-Jeep

.

Well folks it’s that time of year again. Time to take a break for a bit and to enjoy the summer sun. I’ll probably still be around but I want to try and give the computer a break and spend a bit of time with the family.

For the next week I’ve scheduled a dozen walkarounds to go up here with another dozen or so to go up on MilitaryModels as well. With still over a hundred walkarounds to organise and put up on the sites these are the ones that keep getting pushed to the end of the queue. So if you’re a fan of British artillery and trucks then the next week is for you.

If anything fantastic pops up in the news I’ll pop in to throw something up, but other than that I’ll be back right after New Years day. So Merry Christmas to you all, at least all those of you who celebrate it. Keep safe, have a Happy New Year and I’ll see you back here in just over a week.

And here’s hoping Santa is good to you. He has my Xmas wishlist, I’ll let you know if it turns out whether I was good this year or not.
